Assessment Measures
Assessment measures are specific methods used to gather evidence of curriculum effectiveness and student learning or student experience in relation to stated outcomes. At AMU/APU, they are explicitly described as the means by which achievement of learning outcomes is evaluated across levels.
Direct assessment measures
These evaluate actual student work or performance and provide direct evidence of what students know and can do.
Examples include:
Exams, tests, and quizzes
Rubric scored assignments (e.g., research papers, projects)
Capstone projects
Program exit or standardized tests (e.g., Peregrine programmatic assessments)
Indirect assessment measures
These gather students’ or stakeholders’ perceptions of learning, satisfaction, or preparedness and may help explain or contextualize direct results.
Examples include:
End of program surveys
Student Satisfaction Index (SSI) surveys
Alumni and employer surveys

Rubrics
Rubrics are scoring tools that explicitly represent the performance expectations for an assignment or artifact. A rubric divides the assigned work into component parts and provides clear descriptions of the characteristics of the work associated with each component, at varying levels of mastery. Rubrics can be used for a wide array of assignments: papers, projects, oral presentations, artistic performances, group projects, etc. Rubrics can be used as scoring or grading guides to provide formative or summative feedback to support and guide ongoing learning efforts, or both.
AMU/APU uses the native rubrics system in MyClassroom (D2L Brightspace) to systematically collect course, program, and institution-wide data to measure student learning outcomes.
Peregrine Programmatic Assessment
Students in select programs at AMU/APU are required to participate in the Peregrine Programmatic Assessment. The Peregrine assessment is an outbound exam measuring specific subject knowledge. It is administered to undergraduate and graduate students in relevant programs with specialty accreditation within their capstone or end-of-program course.
Peregrine:
Supports accreditation and quality assurance
Facilitates academic benchmarking
Provides actionable student feedback
Enhances program improvement
